Heathwood Hall Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Golf Practice Facility

Heathwood Hall celebrated the groundbreaking of "The Den," a state-of-the-art, on-campus golf practice facility, on Thursday, February 27.

Thanks to the generosity of Heathwood parents, Chris and Jason Wolfe, this state-of-the-art practice area will be located adjacent to the Boyd PEAK Center on the far west side of Heathwood’s 122 acre campus.

"The Den" will feature a 360-degree target green for pitching and chipping, four synthetic tee boxes, an artificial turf putting green, two bunkers, and a 100-yard pitching runway. This facility will be the first of its kind at a PreK-12 school, rivaling the types of golf complexes typically found at the collegiate and professional levels.

The facility will be designed by world-renowned golf architect Craig Schreiner, whose portfolio includes over 100 public, private, and resort courses, including Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY, and Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY.

“An on-campus golf facility opens up opportunities, creating a living classroom that exposes students to agronomy, architecture, sustainability, design engineering, permitting, irrigation, maintenance, and planning, exercise and the physicality of the sport of golf,” said Chris Wolfe. Wolfe expressed that this facility will offer Heathwood's students and golf athletes a dedicated space to learn the game, practice conveniently on campus, and, most importantly, foster relationships with one another both on and off the green.

Wolfe stated, “I am excited about what a facility of this kind on a PreK-12 campus means for the golf industry, and I hope it will serve as a pioneering model for other institutions in the future.”

Heathwood Hall would like to thank its generous donors, whose support has made this vision a reality. Contributors to the project include Chris and Jason Wolfe of Columbia, Ryan Horton of Indigo Construction, Chip Clarkson of Palmetto Green Landscaping, Inc., Ethan Hart of Strategis Engineering, and The Heathwood Hall Board of Trustees.

“This gift adds to the momentum of the transformative Campaign to Enhance the Student Experience, which raised close to $13 million and resulted in $25 million of campus additions and renovations.  I am most excited that this new facility provides our golfers with an unrivaled opportunity to hone their game on campus,” said Chris Hinchey, Head of School.

"The Den" will be unveiled in summer 2025.
