The SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is currently fundraising to purchase one of the world’s greatest collections of English-imported arms and equipment used in the American Civil War. The CA Huey Collection paints a comprehensive picture of how the South fought the Civil War. This magnificent collection contains 351 objects, including rifles, pistols, holsters, sabers, bayonets, knives, knapsacks, cartridge boxes, rifle slings, cap pouches, ammunition pouches, bullet molds, cartridges, and artillery projectiles. All are of English and European manufacture and were imported through the Union Blockade into the Confederate states. On Saturday, May 21, the museum is offering visitors a rare opportunity to preview the CA Huey Collection, which is the largest known collection of its kind. From 11:30-3:30, a selection of forty stunning artifacts from the collection will be on exhibit in the museum’s Education Room. Rifles, bayonets, scabbards, revolvers, carbines, swords, accoutrements, and artillery shells will be included in the display. This is the only scheduled display of these artifacts until the collection is included in a 2019 exhibit that will explore the international dimension of the American Civil War, so take this opportunity to see them now. This special event is included with regular museum admission. Donations towards the purchase of the collection will be accepted as well. Founded in 1896, the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area. The museum focuses on South Carolina’s military history from the Revolutionary War to the present. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00-5:00, and the first Sunday of the month 1:00-5:00, and located at 301 Gervais Street (in the same building as the State Museum).
