IT Council Luncheon: The Anatomy of an Open Source Project

The Anatomy of an Open Source Project
In this talk, Greg will take the audience through every aspect of an open source project, including structures, workflow, version control, licensing, making contributions, etc.  If you?re ever wondered how open source works and what a project looks like, this presentation is for you.

"Generally, open source refers to a computer program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design. Open-source code is typically a collaborative effort where programmers improve upon the source code and share the changes within the community so that other members can help improve it further."
In this session, Greg will specifically cover:

  •      Typical structures of open source projects--ownership, maintainers, committers, etc.
  •     Introduction to open source workflow.
  •     A quick introduction to git, github, and gerrit.
  •     License considerations (I am not a lawyer :) ).
  •     Walkthrough: making a logo contribution to Pithos (a Pandora radio client).
  •     Walkthrough: making a code contribution to oVirt (a datacenter virtualization platform).
